Creating Change Wear (Where) You Are: Katherine Schildmeyer
Changewear is committed to supporting women where they are. We believe that when we are supporting each other no matter the circumstances or story, then there is a movement that is created empowering each other to be our very best version of ourselves. One of the ways we do this is by celebrating our differences, sharing our challenges, acknowledging our wins and shining light on our tenacity and strength.
Changewear is pleased to present a series of inspiring women and the amazing books, businesses and impact they are bringing to our world. We are pleased to bring you these stories of how these women are Creating Change Where They Are.
Meet Katherine (Katy):
We are pleased for you to meet Katherine (Katy) Schildmeyer. Katy is the brains behind the beauty of fashion. In her business, KS Apparel Designs, she assists companies with creative direction, fashion design, graphic design, supply chain management, scaling up and more. She works with companies in the apparel and accessory markets to encompass the work on back to front end development. She even assisted Changewear with some of our recent bra designs (see below)!
Changewear: Please tell us about your company and how you came to create this?
Katy Schildmeyer: I assist companies with creative direction, fashion/graphic design, supply chains, and etc. I really encompass the work on back to front end development in apparel/accessory markets. I created the company by working freelance. As my list of client needs grew, I saw a need for a offering a range of services that would help start-up to moderate size companies. Not many people have the knowledge of both parts of the business, but it is very integral to growth.
It also was initially the key way to work enough to pay my bills. Almost half of the US fashion design market works under freelance hiring methods. The term “ Starving Artist” is real.
CW: Change is a big part of our brand and we believe in effecting change where you are and that even the smallest change can bring about huge benefits. What are some changes that you made in your life that had great impacts on you or others around you?
KS: One was going back to school for my fashion design & manufacturing degree at the age of 32. I moved away from things I know to pursue the betterment of self. When I did this it pushed my sister to head back to school as well. She also wanted to be her better self. By doing this she stopped drinking, became a chiropractor and is seeking her ND. Sometimes when we change ourselves for the better, we can inspire those closest to us to do the same.
CW: What are some ways that we can help support you?
KS: Support comes in all forms, but for any organization, it think it comes down to getting the word out. We all need to thrive, sharing or alerting others to a company, service, or product is the best support. I really enjoy teaching others all that I know, as well as speaking to groups through Q & A sessions.
CW: What are you most looking forward to in your immediate future?
KS: Growth for all my clients. I see my clients go through a ton of phases. It isn't easy work and anything I can do to help someone succeed is the best. Success can be personal growth, or business growth. Both are exceptionally important in running a company. I like to see their confidence grow, for them to become solid in the direction of the company, and most of all be comfortable with change, and yet extremely focused on agendas. Success is a two way street and does require a team, while looking different as time passes by.
CW: We have met you in person and I really love the thoughtful and impactful changes you are creating. We are excited to follow you along on your path to greatness. We would love to follow you on social media, what are your links? Please tell us where you can find KS Apparel Designs.
KS: Sometimes my client companies will tag me, which helps. However, most of the time it is via blogging and etc. the links are below. Clients in some cases are under a NDA, so sometimes I can’t share everything I do right away. This keeps me on my toes for my own business goals.
