Creating Change Wear (Where) You Are: Katherine Schildmeyer

Changewear is committed to supporting women where they are. We believe that when we are supporting each other no matter the circumstances or story, then there is a movement that is created empowering each other to be our very best version of ourselves. One of the ways we do this is by celebrating our differences, sharing our challenges, acknowledging our wins and shining light on our tenacity and strength.

Changewear is pleased to present a series of inspiring women and the amazing books, businesses and impact they are bringing to our world. We are pleased to bring you these stories of how these women are Creating Change Where They Are.

Meet Katherine (Katy):

We are pleased for you to meet Katherine (Katy) Schildmeyer. Katy is the brains behind the beauty of fashion. In her business, KS Apparel Designs, she assists companies with creative direction, fashion design, graphic design, supply chain management, scaling up and more. She works with companies in the apparel and accessory markets to encompass the work on back to front end development. She even assisted Changewear with some of our recent bra designs (see below)!

Changewear: Please tell us about your company and how you came to create this?

Katy Schildmeyer: I assist companies with creative direction, fashion/graphic design, supply chains, and etc. I really encompass the work on back to front end development in apparel/accessory markets. I created the company by working freelance. As my list of client needs grew, I saw a need for a offering a range of services that would help start-up to moderate size companies. Not many people have the knowledge of both parts of the business, but it is very integral to growth.

It also was initially the key way to work enough to pay my bills. Almost half of the US fashion design market works under freelance hiring methods. The term “ Starving Artist” is real.

CW: Change is a big part of our brand and we believe in effecting change where you are and that even the smallest change can bring about huge benefits. What are some changes that you made in your life that had great impacts on you or others around you?

KS: One was going back to school for my fashion design & manufacturing degree at the age of 32. I moved away from things I know to pursue the betterment of self. When I did this it pushed my sister to head back to school as well. She also wanted to be her better self. By doing this she stopped drinking, became a chiropractor and is seeking her ND. Sometimes when we change ourselves for the better, we can inspire those closest to us to do the same.

CW: What are some ways that we can help support you?

KS: Support comes in all forms, but for any organization, it think it comes down to getting the word out. We all need to thrive, sharing or alerting others to a company, service, or product is the best support. I really enjoy teaching others all that I know, as well as speaking to groups through Q & A sessions.

CW: What are you most looking forward to in your immediate future?

KS: Growth for all my clients. I see my clients go through a ton of phases. It isn't easy work and anything I can do to help someone succeed is the best. Success can be personal growth, or business growth. Both are exceptionally important in running a company. I like to see their confidence grow, for them to become solid in the direction of the company, and most of all be comfortable with change, and yet extremely focused on agendas. Success is a two way street and does require a team, while looking different as time passes by.

CW: We have met you in person and I really love the thoughtful and impactful changes you are creating. We are excited to follow you along on your path to greatness. We would love to follow you on social media, what are your links? Please tell us where you can find KS Apparel Designs.

KS: Sometimes my client companies will tag me, which helps. However, most of the time it is via blogging and etc. the links are below. Clients in some cases are under a NDA, so sometimes I can’t share everything I do right away. This keeps me on my toes for my own business goals.

Creating Change Wear (Where) You Are: Shannon Keith

Changewear is committed to supporting women where they are. We believe that supporting each other, no matter the circumstances or story, creates a movement to empower each other. By celebrating our differences, sharing challenges and acknowledging our wins, we shine light on our tenacity, resilience and strength.

Changewear is pleased to present a series featuring inspiring women and their amazing accomplishments and impact. By highlighting and sharing each woman’s story and passionate endeavors, we can build each other up, spread the word, create a meaningful network of support and share stories of how women are Creating Change Where They Are.

Meet Shannon:

We are pleased for you to meet Shannon Keith, CEO and founder of Sudara. Sudara is a company which embodies the heart-warming qualities of social enterprise in every way. Sudara works to empower women, end human trafficking, and embrace the power of social enterprise to create deep, sustainable impact. Sudara creates loungewear, robes and pajamas while working to end human trafficking by providing hope, freedom and opportunity through living-wage jobs, skills training, and education to women in India.

Changewear: Please tell us about your business and how you came to create it.

Shannon Keith: I traveled often but my trip to India in 2005 struck me in a way that I couldn’t ever forget. I saw firsthand the tragedy that was occurring daily to women and girls throughout the country. After visiting one of India’s many red light districts, I realized what was occurring was modern day slavery. I heard story after story of young girls sold into the sex trade by their families, orphans picked up off the street by pimps, and even young mothers just trying to feed their children. Many were held against their will. Others were trapped by economic poverty. Worst of all were the stories of those who managed to escape the brothels only to return due to social stigma with no other way to survive.

These realities forever changed me. The women I met and heard about needed an alternative -- a safer, sustainable source of income. I came back to the States after that trip and got a few friends together.  We researched groups in India that were providing job-skills training programs and what products are in-demand and easy for someone to sew. Out of that research came a partnership with a center in India and a pattern for Punjammies pajama pants. I founded Sudara (then known as International Princess Project) the following year (2006) and we were able to employ six at-risk women to create Sudara’s products.

CW: Change is a big part of our brand and we believe in effecting change where you are and that even the smallest change can bring about huge benefits. What are some changes that you made in your life that had great impacts on you or others around you?

SK: One of the most obvious was changing my mind and buying behaviors around consumer products and ethical supply chains.  It's affected me and my family and how we consume and it's also changed the lives of anyone who's been involved with Sudara, as an employee, customer, partner in India, etc. I think that this change reflects how changing a mindset, will lead to changes in behaviors and eventually habits that have a profound effect on you as an individual and then ultimately your community/network is also impacted via proximity and a ripple effect.

CW: What are some ways that we can help support you? What would you like us to know?

SK:  We’d love for you to gift Sudara goods this holiday season and tell friends and family about us, too! Each of us have the ability to rethink how and where we are spending our money; it’s our purchase power. We can choose to shop with ethically-made brands and brands that are giving back and those who are transparent about their supply chain.  From a sustainability perspective, we can also choose to repurpose the clothes in our closet for another season rather than purchase new every season, have clothing swaps with friends (this has been popular among the Sudara team!) and shop consignment / thrift stores.

CW: What are you most looking forward to in your immediate future?

SK: Spending time with my family cooking and eating amazing food and being cozy over the holidays.  I also really love to snowboard and I'm praying for good snow to arrive soon!

CW: Changewear is excited to support you because of the thoughtful and impactful changes your are creating. To allow us to follow you and advocate, please share your social media and contact information.

Creating Change Wear (Where) You Are™

Creating Change Wear (Where) You Are: Sarina Sandstrom

Changewear is committed to supporting women where they are. We believe that supporting each other, no matter the circumstances or story, creates a movement to empower each other. By celebrating our differences, sharing challenges and acknowledging our wins, we shine light on our tenacity, resilience and strength.

Changewear is pleased to present a series featuring inspiring women and their amazing accomplishments and impact. By highlighting and sharing each woman’s story and passionate endevours, we can build each other up, spread the word, create a meaningful network of support and share stories of how women are Creating Change Where They Are.

Meet Sarina:

We are pleased for you to meet Sarina Sandstrom. Sarina is a passionate entrepreneur and author of the new book, The Guide to Gusto. Sarina has made it her mission to inspire people to take action to do what they love. Her book is designed to help people succeed in business in life by utilizing their own unique talents and tendencies. She believes that by learning, loving, and leveraging yourself, you can live a joyful and fulfilled life. She is working to get this message out in the world and support as many entrepreneurs and individuals as possible through their journeys of self-discovery. We are so grateful to learn from Sarina and celebrate her mission and influence in creating change were she is.

Changewear: Please tell us about your book and business and how you came to create them.

Sarina Sandstrom: The last year has been a whirlwind of amazing opportunities for me. I was able to start my own freelance consulting business, finalize and publish my first book, and look toward my future of being an influential change-maker.

My book, The Guide to Gusto: 20 Ways to Learn, Love & Leverage Yourself to Unlock a Life of Happiness, Purpose & Productivity, is all about creating a life you love. We all want a happy and fulfilled life for our children, so why don’t we take action to pursue this ourselves? I witnessed so many people making choices in their lives because of what they believed they “should” do, rather than what they “want” to do. I experienced this pressure myself and decided enough was enough!

This book is written to help people succeed in business and life by utilizing their own unique talents and tendencies. By learning about yourself, loving what you see, and leveraging what you discover, you can supercharge your reality to align with your deepest desires. The book is intentionally designed to be flexible for each reader’s experience and offer real self-discovery evaluations in each chapter to help them take action. Do what you love! Life is too short not to.

On the same topic, I am an entrepreneur and personal development junkie. I believe in the power of positivity and using your authenticity to your advantage. I also believe that well-being is the key to entrepreneurial success. I help passionate entrepreneurs with strategy, coaching, and support services to align their businesses with their values, utilize their strengths, and launch a business they can feel proud of.

I continue to learn more about positive psychology and personal development, improve my writing and communication strengths, and take action to support entrepreneurs and students of life in their worth-while journeys to a fulfilled life.

CW: Change is a big part of our brand and we believe in effecting change where you are and that even the smallest change can bring about huge benefits. What are some changes that you made in your life that had great impacts on you or others around you?

SS: Change has been a huge part of my life over the last 6 years. I’ve moved 8 times in the last 6 years, twice halfway across the country, and I am a firm believer that nothing in life is a better teacher than change. Learning to embrace the natural ebbs and flows in life has been a key to my success and happiness in business and life. Like they say, change is inevitable, so fighting it is a poor use of energy. Seeing new places (I’m a huge travel junkie!) and meeting new people add the best sort of spice to life. The people I have met along the way have changed my life in so many incredibly positive ways.

Change isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it. Spiritually, I believe that everything happens for a reason, and remembering this has helped me embrace the whirlwind of change that has been my life recently. Learn to love change...but do so from the place of always knowing who you are and who you want to be. Allow your values, goals, missions, and intentions to be the stabling constants in your life among all the exciting and inevitable change. You will grow from it, I promise!

CW: What are some ways that we can help support you? What would you like us to know?

SS: I’m always looking for ways to spread my message. Everyone deserves to live a passionate life filled with great enthusiasm...or gusto! My mission is to connect with others and inspire, encourage, and support them in discovering their authentic selves and taking action to live their lives in a way that challenges them to see their greatness and experience fulfillment and joy each day.

My hope would be to have you share my book with someone in your life who deserves to be their authentic, happy self. Share about my business intentions with an entrepreneur (or aspiring entrepreneur) or individual in your life who might be struggling to find clarity or take meaningful next steps. You can help connect me with people who deserve support in order to live a life they love.

CW: What are you most looking forward to in your immediate future?

SS: I am looking forward to continuing to learn, love, and leverage myself in order to grow as a writer and entrepreneur. I am currently loving reading about positive psychology, positive education, and personal growth in academia. I hope to discover strategies and tools that I can use to help myself and others and continue to grow my business. I’m also looking forward to my second grand European adventure this summer with my wonderful partner!

CW: Changewear is excited to support you because of the thoughtful and impactful changes your are creating. To allow us to follow you and advocate, please share your social media and contact information.

SS: You can follow me on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter, and check out my website for more about my business and writing. And please give my book a little love, as well! It is launching in October of 2018.

Sarina, Thank you for taking the time to be interviewed and sharing your greatness with our Changewear community. We wish you the very best as you continue sharing and pursuing your meaningful mission!

XOXO,

Creating Change Wear (Where) You Are: Destiny Davis

Changewear is committed to supporting women where they are. We believe that when we are supporting each other no matter the circumstances or story, then there is a movement that is created empowering each other to be our very best version of ourselves. One of the ways we do this is by celebrating our differences, sharing our challenges, acknowledging our wins and shining light on our tenacity and strength.

Changewear is pleased to present a series of inspiring women and the amazing books, businesses and impact they are bringing to our world. We are pleased to bring you these stories of how these women are Creating Change Where They Are.

Meet Destiny:

We are pleased for you to meet Destiny Davis. Destiny is a Luxury Real Estate Agent with Douglas Elliman. Destiny brings heart and passionate lifestyle optimization to the industry and offers her clients an exceptional experience as they move from contract to close. Destiny is passionate about people and uses her expertise and wisdom to craft a meaningful and supportive journey for each and every one of her clients. We are so grateful to learn from Destiny and celebrate her work and influence in creating change were she is.

Changewear: Please tell us about your company/mission and how you came to create this?

Destiny Davis: Douglas Elliman was established in 1911, we are passionate about delivering exceptional consumer experiences. Essentially, I am a business within a business. From sales and rentals, to investors and developers; I create a seamless process for my clients, navigating them through the Real Estate journey from contract to close. Intentionally weaving in lifestyle optimization throughout the process, adding much needed Heart to the client experience and to the industry.

CW: Change is a big part of our brand and we believe in effecting change where you are and that even the smallest change can bring about huge benefits. What are some changes that you made in your life that had great impacts on you or others around you?

DD: In general, I’ve learned to embrace change, as it’s the only real constant in life; learning to accept what Is, in the Present moment as an ever-changing process. However, I don’t necessarily like the word “change” in this specific connotation, instead I would offer the word “returning”. The Dali Lama said, "Be the change you want to see in the world," and so in this sense yes, change is the greatest gift you can give others around you.

Be the Light, Be the Love; Be Whole, Be Kind. However, learning what it really means to Be these things is the journey of enlightenment or self-actualization. So in this sense, it’s all about Returning to the original Essence of your Spirit, the I Am Presence within you, and learning to operate from this place of Being in the world.

It’s a return trip; and mostly the returning is about un-conditioning and unlearning, shedding years and layers of programming, judgements, labels, self-limiting beliefs, shame, fear, illusion, etc. etc., all things manifest of the ego mind. Of course, ego in the spiritual sense, Edging God out, not ego as in an inflated version of self.

Most people believe that changing your life requires huge and drastic shifts, while I believe fully that it’s unlikely huge moments of Awakening that create real “change”, but it is small actions, small decisions, made every day, to do better and be better that start to shift the trajectory of our lives. And when the Awakening comes in a flash of Inspiration, it’s because we’ve primed ourselves to receive through a thousand small, but intentional acts. It’s a compounding effect and anyone in finance knows compounding is where real wealth is created, same with Spirit.

The Tao teaches,

“In the universe great acts are made up of small deeds.

The sage does not attempt anything very big,

And thus, achieves greatness.”

Additionally, what has really helped me is learning to be mindful of self-talk, Intention and Awareness of who I am and what I stand for. Real Estate can be an emotionally brutal business, and if you’re not mindful, it can beat you down; it can be easy to fall into “tit for tat”, scarcity, fear, injustice; all things manifest of the ego mind.

Or just in life, when I am feeling resistance toward something that I know is good for me but I’m also feeling tired, sad, lazy, etc.… I will ask myself these two questions; I’ll say to myself, “D, is this really who you are… and is this reaaally what you stand for…?” After that… and this has really been life changing, I will ask myself; “If I didn’t have this belief ___, what would I do?” For example, many of us have a deep fear of rejection, or failure, because deep down we hold a belief of not being enough or of being unworthy, so I’ll ask myself; If I really knew deep down inside that I was enough, what would I do?... What if I fail?... Then what?... If you can ask yourself these questions in the space of stillness, without attachment and labels to what the answer should be, Spirit will whisper Truth to you and slowly, you’ll learn to listen to and trust the wisdom of your own heart.

You’ll never be afraid of failure because you’ll know there is no such thing; you either “fail” or you learn. What’s failure anyway? How do you know that not getting what you wanted in that moment isn’t the best thing that ever happened to you?

CW: What are some ways that we can help support you? What would you like us to know?

DD: You can support me by being a kind human being in the world. Light a match in a dark place. Take a moment to be Present where ever you are, look at your friend, family member, colleague, stranger, in the eyes and listen to them with your heart. It’s scary in the world of social media, how disconnected we’ve become, how polarized, zombie-like, completely unconscious to our shared common humanity.

So many people, in their own living rooms, will leave loving compliments for celebrities and total strangers on their social media, just to look up from their phone and yell at the dog or freak out on their child or spouse, it’s insanity, or have you ever thought of where the food your about to eat even came from? We need you now more than ever, brave souls that are unafraid to authentically shine and live an inspired life.

CW: What are you most looking forward to in your immediate future?

DD: I am excited to finish my yoga teacher training in the middle of November, I’ve always had a deep passion for Yoga and really looking forward to sharing that passion. Additionally, I have a lot of exciting things happening in my Real Estate career; I’m waiting for my license to come from Nevada. I have really exciting news but am unable to share at this time, more to come in October!

CW: We have met you in person and I really love the thoughtful and impactful changes you are creating. We are excited to follow you along on your path to greatness. We would love to follow you on social media, what are your links? Please tell us where you can find your company.

DD: You can find me at @destinydavis824 on both Instagram and Twitter!

Destiny, Thank you for taking the time to be interviewed and sharing your greatness with our Changewear community. We wish you the very best as you continue bringing heart to your industry!

Changewear is committed to supporting women where they are.

Meet Sara:

We are pleased for you to meet Sara Batterby. Sara is the founder of The Batterby Group, an innovative business that helps startups in search of capital acquire funding from angel and seed stage investors. Sara is passionate about equal access to capital for female, minority and LGBTQ founders, those who have been traditionally excluded from the game. Her wisdom and strategies have helped countless entrepreneurs realize their dreams of business ownership. We are so grateful to learn from Sara and celebrate her passion and influence in creating change were she is.

Changewear: Please tell us about your company and how you came to create this?

Sara Batterby: The Batterby Group was created to expand  access to capital for founders who have traditionally been excluded from “old-boy” capital networks.  Namely women, people of color and the LGBTQ communities. We teach founders the technical and tactical aspects of raising money. We also coach them through an investor engagement methodology that allows them to connect with investors, engage them in a structured investment process and ultimately convert even casual interest into closed capital without the wasted time, pitch-performance-art and drama usually associated with raising capital.

CW: Change is a big part of our brand and we believe in effecting change where you are and that even the smallest change can bring about huge benefits. What are some changes that you made in your life that had great impacts on you or others around you?

SB: I learned to take responsibility for everything that happens in my life and this gave me a strong ethical foundation and a sense of control.  Then I learned that everything is generally OK but that I sometimes think about things in a way that is not helpful to me. So I learned to slow my mind and take time to reflect and remind myself that my thoughts do not define me and that I am fine!  These things have created space in my mind that invites insight, awareness and a connection with everything around me. I believe that insight and connectedness are tools to change the world.

CW: What are some ways that we can help support you? What would you like us to know?

SB: Just know you can do it… whatever it is.

CW: What are you most looking forward to in your immediate future?

SB: Launching my new website and having an accessible and affordable content platform to support people raising money for their companies.
